Articles (a, an, the) คือคำนำหน้านามที่บอกเราว่ากำลังพูดถึงสิ่งของแบบ **"ทั่วไป"** หรือ **"เฉพาะเจาะจง"**

ทั่วไป (General)

พูดถึงสิ่งของใดก็ได้ ไม่ได้ชี้เฉพาะว่าเป็นอันไหน เช่น "ฉันอยากได้เก้าอี้ซักตัว" (เก้าอี้ตัวไหนก็ได้)

ใช้: a / an

เฉพาะเจาะจง (Specific)

พูดถึงสิ่งที่ทั้งคนพูดและคนฟังรู้กันว่าคืออันไหน เช่น "เก้าอี้ตัวนั้นสวยจัง" (ชี้ให้ดูแล้ว)

ใช้: the

"a" หรือ "an" เลือกที่ "เสียง"!

เราเลือกใช้ a หรือ an กับ **คำนามนับได้เอกพจน์ (singular countable nouns)** โดยดูจาก **"เสียงแรก"** ของคำที่ตามมา

ใช้ "a" + เสียงพยัญชนะ

• a book (เสียง /b/)
• a university (เสียง /j/ ไม่ใช่เสียง /u/)
• a European country (เสียง /j/)

ใช้ "an" + เสียงสระ

เสียง อะ, เอ, อิ, โอ... (vowel sound)

• an apple (เสียง /æ/)
• an elephant (เสียง /e/)
• an hour (h ไม่ออกเสียง, เสียงแรกคือ /aʊ/)
• an MBA (ออกเสียง เอ็ม-บี-เอ)
